Computer Checkup Part VII

This is the last part of my seven part series, and has to do with upgrading your software. This is a relatively easy step that is often only needed if you run into trouble. I include this suggestion because it is a great, first step before having to re-install software, or worst yet, hiring someone to fix your problem. If you have the MS Office suite of products, then you’ll want to make sure that you have the latest updates. Try this link to see if your version of Microsoft Office has the latest updates:

You might save this link as a favorites, and check if every month or so.What about your other software? Fortunately, there is now a standard way to check most of your other software for the latest updates. On the main menu of most software products, select Help>Updates. Usually you will be directed to the software company’s website software update page. Look for downloads for your version of the product. If you are not sure what version of the product that you have, often you can determine that by going to Help>About Software Product XYZ.I’ve been talking about software, but let’s not forget other products in your computer office such as your printer, fax, or router. Once, my fax machine started interrupting my phone conversations. After calling the fax manufacturer and the phone company, I ultimately learned that my fax machine needed a firmware update. I accessed the manufacturer’s website, downloaded the update for my product, and the problem was fixed. So next time something isn’t working, consider looking for updates for your software or hardware product.

Simple, but fun entertainment

It’s no secret that I love the wild birds around our house. The hummingbird feeder needs filling up every day. I feel like I’m feeding all of the goldfinches in the Willamette Valley, and that Nyger thistle seed is not cheap. I have a bird bath in both the front and back yards. What was I missing? Nesting material! For about five bucks, you can buy a big ball of cotton fiber contained in a string holder. It only took two days for the birds to discover it. How entertaining it is for birds to fill their mouths with a big puff of cotton! So for some simple, inexpensive entertainment, hang some nesting material to a hook near a window, and enjoy.

Am I the last to get wireless?

As my friends and family will tell you, I don’t spend money easily. I like to research something, and think and think. I waited awhile before buying a laptop rationalizing that it is a great way to stay in touch while traveling. I am, after all, a virtual assistant.

I found that I was using the laptop more at home than on the road. When I used it, though, I often wished I could connect to this or that on the internet. It was time to think of using the wireless capability of the laptop.

I had a concern, though, and it was really more about security than it was about cost. I did some research on line and with the help text on my laptop, and I was convinced that the security would be okay as long as I installed the wireless router properly. By that I mean don’t skip that all important step of adding a long security code. (Hint: put aside enough time for the installation, and call support (a.k.a. India) if necessary.)

Next concern was cost. I first went looking for a “wireless access point” to my existing cable router. To my surprise, it was less expensive to purchase a new wireless router than it was to buy the access point. My “non-wireless” devices are still “hard wired” into the router.

Not unlike my experience with my Ipod where in no time I went from, “What do I do with this thing?” to “I can’t live without it,” I love using my laptop with wireless access. I’m no longer chained to my desk downstairs. I love the flexibility, convenience, and freedom.

Curling with the Big Boys

 Kristy with Coach Bob Fenson

Recently, our curling club (http://www.evergreencurling.org) was honored with a visit by the bronze winning 2006 Olympic men’s curlers, Team Fenson. After golfing and lunching with some of our team members, they joined us on the ice for a demonstration and strategy discussion. They curled with us in a mock game, and then gave us tips on how to improve our performance. If that weren’t enough, they later attended our team potluck and stayed hours as they regaled us with curling related stories (including the Tortellini Story) as we fans sat on the edge of our seats.  In these days when celebrity sports figures are in the press for their misdeeds, it was inspiring to meet such down-to-earth athletes who are generous with their time. Thanks Pete, Shawn, Joe, Scott, and Coach Bob!
